Whitestown Branch receives Advancing Racial Equity Grant to expand collection

The HMMPL is proud to announce that we have been awarded an Advancing Racial Equity Collection Development Grant by Indiana Humanities, joining 76 other institutions across the state. Thanks to this grant, the library will expand the Whitestown Branch’s collection with over 65 new materials, including DVDs, Blu-Rays, board books, and a wide range of children’s, teen, and adult fiction and non-fiction titles. These additions are designed to help patrons explore diverse perspectives and experiences, furthering our commitment to building a more inclusive community.

The grant has allowed us to purchase a variety of materials that are unique to the Whitestown Branch. Some of the featured new additions include:

  • Hey Baby!: A Baby’s Day in Doodles by Andrea Pippins – This vibrant board book is perfect for little readers, using playful illustrations to take families on a journey through a baby’s daily activities.
  • Catch a Star: Shining Through Adversity to Become a Champion by Tamika Catchings – This inspiring memoir from the former Indiana Fever forward reveals how Catchings overcame hearing loss and other obstacles to become one of basketball’s greatest players. It’s a must-read for young athletes and fans of the sport.
  • In Bibi’s Kitchen: The Recipes and Stories of Grandmothers from the Eight African Countries That Touch the Indian Ocean by Hawa Hassan and Julia Turshen – This cookbook shares recipes and heartwarming stories from African grandmothers, highlighting the rich culinary traditions of eight countries, offering a window into cultures often overlooked.

These titles, and many more, are now on display at the Whitestown Branch and are available for checkout by anyone with an HMMPL card. The addition of these resources offers something for everyone, from young children to adults, encouraging patrons to read, think, and engage with materials that reflect a wide array of voices and experiences.

The addition of these resources to our collection has been made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities with funds from Lilly Endowment, Inc.

We are thrilled to provide these resources to our community and invite everyone to come explore the new materials and participate in the ongoing conversation about diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Make sure to visit us soon at the Whitestown Branch to check out these exciting new titles!
