Digital Service of the Month: CultureGrams

Our Digital Library Branch offers dozens of online resources, most accessible 24/7 from anywhere on a mobile device, tablet or laptop. In our Digital Service of the Month feature, we’re highlighting these services to help Library cardholders and visitors learn more about what’s available. For August, we’re featuring CultureGrams, an online resource with information about cultures and countries from around the world, including the USA.

The goal of CultureGrams is to foster understanding and appreciation of the world’s countries and peoples by creating and publishing concise, reliable, and up-to-date cultural content. CultureGrams is a trusted and widely used cultural reference in the education, government, and non-profit arenas.

HMMPL Library Card holders can access this free service by clicking on the CultureGrams link in our Digital Library Branch and entering your Card number. (Visitors to the Library who are logged onto our Wi-Fi network do not need a Library Card to use CultureGrams.) Once you’re logged in, you can choose from four editions:

  • World Edition: Experience the world with cultural information on more than 200 countries and territories. (For junior high school students and up.)
  • Kids Edition: Get a kid’s-eye view of daily life in countries around the world. (For upper elementary students and up.)
  • States Edition: Explore all the U.S. states in colorful, engaging reports. (For upper elementary students and up.)
  • Provinces Edition: Tour all the Canadian provinces and territories in 13 image-filled reports. (For upper elementary students and up.)

CultureGrams also includes resources for educators. Teaching Activities includes 78 activities that integrate CultureGrams into the classroom. Curriculum Standards explains how the World Edition database meets or develops several national standards in multiple curricular areas.
