September 7, 2023 – We celebrated Mr. Mike our Train Guy with a fun day of train-themed activities. We had a train storytime, a train craft and lots of time hanging out at the train table. Several of the children brought homemade cards and letters to let Mr. Mike know how much they appreciate him.
August 21, 2023 – Several families joined us for our American Sign Language Storytime in partnership with the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. Justin Perez, our guest storyteller, read the book Don’t Wake the Dragon, along with an ASL interpreter. The children also made their own paper dragons!
August 18, 2023 – Toddlers and preschoolers enjoyed a morning of hopping, skipping and dancing with Miss Kelli and Miss Kristin during our August Romp & Stomp.

August 4, 2023 – Families joined us at Elm Street Green to celebrate the new StoryWalk, featuring the book Hurry Up! by Kate Dopirak. The children also sang songs with the Librarians and learned a few yoga moves to help them slow down.
August 3, 2023 – Jody Smith, co-owner of Union Music Academy in Union, KY, visited us to sing, dance and play during our recent Music Makes Me Move program. Children had fun exploring the book Dear Zoo through various musical activities.
August 1, 2023 – Jacqueline Pratt, the recently crowned Miss Boone County 2023, joined us to read some fun Princess books. The children also did fun activities and made their own paper crowns.
July 26, 2023 – Several families joined us for an end-of-summer-reading Beach Bingo party! Winners got to choose a prize from a treasure chest, and by the end of the evening, everyone was a winner!
July 21, 2023 – Our 5th Street parking lot was filled with all kinds of big trucks for our annual Touch-a-Truck event. Families came to see big machines and everyday community builders up close. Anchor Face Painting also was on hand to offer cool face designs.
July 10, 2023 – Roz Puppets performed The Frog Prince at the Library. This original story based on the familiar tale featured a brand new cast of puppets made specifically for the story.

July 7, 2023 – Several families joined us for a story and activity at Elm Street Green to celebrate the July StoryWalk featuring the book How to Say Hello to a Worm by Kari Percival.
July 5, 2023 – Paul from Hedghog Hannah visited the Library this week to present the Arctic 11, an animal show with several different animals, including a beautiful Arctic fox. The children also got to see and pet a sulcata tortoise, legless lizard, chinchilla, ferret, rabbit, hedgehog, alligator, tarantula and giant python!
June 20, 2023 – Professor Steve entertained us with his awesome collection of classic, simple machines and taught us the importance of recycling & showing kindness to the earth with his amazing Time Machine.
June 15, 2023 – Brian from Pretty Funny Balloons led families in an afternoon of imaginative play using balloons to teach and entertain. With lots of balloon sculptures to make things fun, we learned that imagination is better with props, friends and games.
June 12, 2023 – Banjer Dan, a “banjo-centric” acoustic musician and entertainer based in Santa Cruz County, CA, visited the library this week, playing his banjo and guitar and singing folk songs. He also brought the fossils he’s collected during his music tours around the country to share with the audience.
June 9, 2023 – Several families joined our youth librarians and a naturalist on the library lawn to enjoy stories and meet some reptiles from the Zionsville Nature Center during Nature Play Days!

June 2, 2023 – Hundreds of families joined us for our Summer Reading Kickoff Party at the Library. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, everyone enjoyed a free Kona Ice and a fun water show, along with games, activities and more.
June 2, 2023 – Miss Kelli and special guest Miss Cecilia led the children in a special outdoor, musical storytime of the book One Is a Piñata by Roseanne Greenfield. Afterward, the children explored the One Is a Piñata StoryWalk at Elm Street Green.
May 31, 2023 – WRTV6 Meteorologist Kevin Gregory joined us for a weather camp, where students learned about clouds and precipitation, severe thunderstorms, and high and low pressure systems.
May 17, 2023 – Dancers from the Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy performed a preview of their Sleeping Beauty Ballet at the Library. Children who attended also learned a few ballet moves, acted out a scene from the show and took pictures with the dancers.
May 17, 2023 – Local author Megan Alms joined us for a special storytime to celebrate her new book, Creature from the Woods. The children enjoyed stories, songs and crafts with Megan and Miss Michelle.
May 16, 2023 – Indy 500 Festival Princess Ryann Bowers joined us for Race Car Storytime. The children listened to stories, sang songs and made their own race car to take home.

May 10, 2023 – The Central Indiana Dance Ensemble visited the Library with a storytime preview of their upcoming ballet performance of Alice in Wonderland. The children who attended also learned a few dance moves and took photos with the ballet dancers.

April 14, 2023 – Author Rob Harrell joined us to celebrate the recent release of his third Batpig book, Go Pig or Go Home! He talked about his writing and drawing career and showed the kids how to draw Batpig and a few of the evil villains from the series.
April 13, 2023 – We welcomed special guest Ivette Mauricio to help us discover Venezuela. Participants learned about the culture, language and food of Venezuela with stories, crafts, activities and a few special treats.
April 6, 2023 – The Youth Department offered an obstacle course for children ages 3 – 6 to practice their gross motor skills. Participants jumped, crawled, balanced, and more as they completed the course!

March 29, 2023 – We recently dedicated a new Interactive Tree in honor of retired Assistant Director Mary Rueff. The interactive musical tree was installed in the sensory garden on the east side of the Library near the 5th Street Entrance and is available for children of all ages to try their hand at making music.
March 20, 2023 – We had a great time at our American Sign Language storytime in partnership with the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. The children enjoyed stories from our guest storytellers, along with an ASL interpreter, plus a craft afterwards.
March 17, 2023 – Local musician Mr. Daniel led the kids in lots of silly songs and dances during our March Romp & Stomp.
March 6, 2023 – We kicked off the 2023 Seed Library with an Opening Reception, where guests received gardening tips and took home free packets of seeds thanks to the support of the Friends of HMMPL.

February 20, 2023 – Ryan the Lion from Silly Safaris entertained a crowd at the Library with his show, Animals with Tales. He also brought along some of his animal “assistants” including Hootin’ Annie the Eagle Owl and Star the Burmese Python.
February 20, 2023 – Everyone had a supa awesome time at our Dog Man Party! Students in grades K – 5 celebrated the crime-biting canine who’s part dog, part man with a whole lotta supa awesome activties.
February 17, 2023 – Our youth librarians led the children in dancing, hopping, twirling and more to a whole playlist of silly songs!

January 20, 2023 – The Youth Department celebrated Chinese New Year with special guest Heidi Watson, who read the story Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon and taught the children songs in Mandarin. The children also made red dragons like the one Amy made in the story.
January 12, 2023 – Children in grades K – 2 joined Miss Kristin for the first Let’s Draw monthly art class, where she led them step by step in drawing a penguin.
January 11, 2023 – Miss Kelli led babies and their caregivers in a beginner lap-sit program that includes songs, rhymes, fingerplays, action-playing a short book and play time.

December 22, 2022 – Our special guests Joo-Yun and her son, Joshua, joined us to read The Jolly Christmas Postman and then helped the children make Christmas cards, play games and participate in other book-themed activities.
December 19, 2022 – Several children and their families joined us for our American Sign Language Storytime in partnership with the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. Justin Perez was our guest storyteller, along with an ASL interpreter, and we ended with a fun craft!
December 13, 2022 – Miss Michelle, Miss Robyn and Miss Lauren joined the Zionsville Parks & Recreation Department at Winterfest at Mulberry Fields for some prancing and dancing to holiday music. Everyone left with a book from the Bookmobile.
December 12, 2022 – Ho, ho, ho! Hop, hop, hop! We had a holly jolly, happenin’ and hoppin’ romp with the Man in Red. Afterwards, Santa stuck around for some photos with the children.
December 8, 2022 – Our special guest, Nǎinai Heidi, joined Miss Kelli and Miss Robyn in a reading of The Little Red Hen in both Chinese and English … plus puppets! The children also sang songs in Chinese and made a little red hen of their own to take home.
December 7, 2022 – Dancers from the Ballet Theatre of Carmel Academy joined us for an in-person preview of the Nutcracker. They retold parts of the story with costumes, props and dancing, and even taught the children a couple of moves.
December 6, 2022 – Musicians from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performed the Teddy Bear Series program, The Runaway Strings! Children moved along to music as they listened to the story of a quartet of string instruments who ran away to search for adventures to bring home to their audience.

November 29, 2022 – The Central Indiana Academy of Dance joined us at the Library for a Ballet Storytime of The Nutcracker. Children enjoyed stories, songs, and of course, dancing!
Check out the dozens of baskets in this year’s Friends of the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library Silent Auction held in conjunction with the Secret Snowflake Shop. Baskets are on display and receiving bids through 5 p.m. Sun., Dec. 4, 2022.
November 28, 2022 – Miss Kelly led the children in a playful time with yoga and movement, exploring all kinds of animals.
November 18, 2022 – Miss Molly from the Zionville Nature Center joined HMMPL Librarians Miss Andrea and Miss Michelle to talk about animals that hibernate through read-aloud stories, rhymes and activities.
November 14, 2022 – Our young patrons spent the evening trying out various STEM stations, including Snap Circuits, CODE Mouse, Kamigami, Boxels, Little Bits Star Wars Droid, Cubelets, Dash Robot, Lego WeDo and more. Laura, our MakerStudio Specialist, also demonstrated one of our 3D printers.

November 1, 2022 – Miss Kelly led the children in fun ABC stories, music, and activities during an alphabet-themed storytime.
October 26, 2022 – Community leaders, Library board members and staff, and members of the Worth Branch Advisory Group gathered at the HMMPL Whitestown Branch construction site to sign a steel beam that will be installed and remain visible in a mechanical room in the new building.
October 24, 2022 – Preschool families spent the morning reading books about animals and learning new words in English and Spanish. They also made a hipopótamo, or hippopotamus, puppet.
October 7, 2022 – Participants met at Elm Street Green to read the book Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood. The children also learned more about spiders and the good work they do in our world.
