Chat with James H. Madison, author of Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland
On Friday, March 12th at 6 PM, the Library will host a virtual chat with Indiana author and historian James H. Madison. He will discuss topics from his newest novel Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland, released in October 2020 Madison, the Thomas & Kathryn Miller Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University & a recipient of the Frederick Jackson Turner Lifetime Achievement Award from the Midwestern History Association., is known for books on the history, people, and events of Indiana.
In this latest piece, Madison focuses on the second wave of the Ku Klux Klan and how it still effects society today. While there were three separate waves of the KKK, the second wave, during the 1920s, was the most prominent and shaped events in the Hoosier state.
Madison tells a story of intrigue, revealing actual events and the roots of this movement in Indiana. He differentiates between the various KKK groups and how each functioned on political, social, and economic levels. Readers will learn how the KKK was viewed by Hoosiers of the 20s and how the women and men of the KKK used fear and violence as a way to change society as a whole.
