Staff Introductions: Lily

Staff Introductions: Lily

Get to know the HMMPL staff!

Each week, we’re featuring one of our amazing staff members.

This week, meet Lily, a Page at the Circulation Department at the Zionsville Branch.

Here are a few fun facts about her:

Hobbies: Reading, hiking, writing, music (listening, playing, reading about it, concerts…I’ll absorb it anyway I can), record collecting, gardening, film photography (a year and a half ago, my mom passed on her camera from high school to me and I’m in love), budding film nerd.

Favorite Book Genre: I don’t tend to be genre specific, although I am fond of mysteries from the Golden Age as well as Nancy Drew. For the last year or so, I’ve been hunting down the original editions to read. Sometime in the 1950’s, the publishers decided to pare down the stories from the original 25 chapters to 20, and update the language for the “modern girl”. These revised editions are among the yellow spines we know and love today. Besides just being a blast to read, it has been fascinating to see the historic perspective (including the fashion, language, social functions, social norms, etc), between the original and later revised copies.

Favorite Movie/Song/Video Game:

Favorite Movie: I love silent films especially those by Buster Keaton. I’m also very fond of cinéma vérité documentaries. It’s fascinating to have that window into other people’s lives and circumstances, to see where they come from and better understand people as they are, no matter what time period. I’ve also seen the works of Robert Bresson and Charlie Chaplin more times than I can count. They’re perfect every time.

Favorite song: An impossible question. Ask me tomorrow and the answer may be totally different. However, I will never tire of hearing Clair de Lune. It makes me feel calm and makes my imagination run wild. One of the first songs I ever remember hearing was Come On, Let’s Go by Ritchie Valens. I have vivid memories of standing on my dad’s feet, belly laughing, as he spun me around the house while listening to it. When I was nineteen years old, I stumbled upon Something on Your Mind by Karen Dalton. It came up spontaneously after my playlist ended while I was walking. I had to sit down. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Her voice crackles like a dusty 78. It’s warm, mournful, and beautifully imperfect. She could sing the blues like nobody’s business and had the life story to back it up.

Favorite video game: I’m not an avid gamer, but I’m really fond of the Lego games. The first one I ever played as a kid was Star Wars on Wii. They’re perfect blend of intricate and silly and gave you a solid end of level. What more could you ask for? I also love the original Paperboy. I have vivid memories of playing it on my cousin’s Nintendo and growing bewildered as he told me I lost a life to a breakdancer, not a guy tying to pull up his pants. Then, I lost a life to the Grim Reaper…. what variety! Not another game like it!

Years at HMMPL: 4.5 years

Favorite part of working at the Library: My favorite part is the people. I’ve been coming to this Library since I was a toddler. I now have the pleasure of calling librarians who helped me my coworkers and friends. As I work on both floors, I get to help patrons of all ages.

Favorite Snack: Currently, peach ice cream brings about exquisite joy. However, any other time of the year I’ll probably opt for garden salsa sun chips. I’m also extremely fond of tea.

Where will patrons find you at the Library: More than likely, you’ll find me on the first or second floor in the stacks, with an armful of books to put away.
