Jul 08, 2026 SEA 1: How Library Services You Rely on Are Affected by Property Tax Cuts
Your Property Tax Dollar:
Less than 5 cents of every property tax dollar is shared among Boone County’s public libraries. This funding helps provide thousands of programs, resources, and services that benefit residents throughout the community.

Why This is Different for Libraries:
Libraries cannot hold a referendum to replace lost operating revenue.
- If property tax revenue decreases, the library cannot ask voters to approve additional funding.
- Instead, the library must adjust its budget to the revenue it receives.
- Other local services my have different funding options.
What Could Change:
Reduced funding means difficult choices.
- Reduced library hours
- Early literacy programs
- Smaller collections
- Reduced digital books & resources
- Lifelong learning opportunities
- Longer wait times
- Reduced programming
- Fewer technology upgrades
- Fewer community events
- Delayed building maintenance
- Reduced staffing
- Job seeker and small business support
- Free access to technology & Wi-Fi
- Community gathering spaces
Every dollar supports services our community uses every day.
Why It Matters:
Our library is a vital resource.

Demand for library services continues to grow – even as funding becomes more uncertain.
Community Impact:
