Seed Library 2023 Flower of the Year

Seeds for the winning flower will be featured in this year’s Seed Library!

Help us choose the HMMPL Seed Library Flower of the Year! Use your pennies to vote for your favorite flower:

Voting jars will be available March 1, 2023, through May 1, 2023, on the Library’s 2nd Floor, along with photos and information about each flower. One cent equals one vote. All funds collected will support the Seed Library. The flower with the most votes will be announced May 5 and will be the featured flower seed in our 2023 Seed Library. Seeds for the other two flowers will be available in 2024.

The Floral Contestants

Here are more details about the three flower options:

Amaranth Midnight Red

  • Botanical Name: Amaranthus Cruentus
  • Seed Life Cycle: Annual
  • Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade
  • Flower Color: Dark Red foliage
  • Bloom Time: Spring to mid-Summer
  • Mature Height: 24-48” tall
  • Features: Edible, also great in ornamental landscape and floral arrangements

Teddy Bear Sunflower

  • Botanical Name:
  • Seed Life Cycle: Annual
  • Light Requirements: Full Sun
  • Flower Color: Fully double golden yellow blooms
  • Bloom Time: Summer to fall
  • Mature Height: 24-36″ tall dwarfed shrubs with 14 ” 16″ spread and 4 ” 5″ double-blooms
  • Features: ideal grow for compact indoor containers, planters, and patios, or as the star to any fresh cut bouquet or arrangement

Painted Daisy

  • Botanical Name: Chrysanthemum carinatum
  • Seed Life Cycle: Annual
  • Light Requirements: Full Sun, Half Sun / Half Shade
  • Flower Color: Mixed
  • Bloom Time: Summer to fall
  • Mature Height: 18-36″ tall
  • Features: Bee Friendly, Good For Cut Flowers, Good For Containers, Deer Resistant
