Little Bookworm Chronicles: Literacy is LOUD!

Little Bookworm Chronicles: Literacy is LOUD!

We often associate quietness and shushing with libraries and literacy.  However, we believe literacy is loud.  Yes, we said it.  Literacy is LOUD!  Early literacy practices for young children include singing, talking, reading, and playing – all activities that can be loud and boisterous!  Is this a bad thing?  No way!

Miss Becky marches to the drum with kiddos at All Ages Storytime!

Have you ever been to one of our library storytimes for youngsters?  Kids and caregivers are making silly voices while reading a book or talking about new words they are seeing and hearing.  They are loudly and proudly singing along to their favorite rhymes while clapping, tapping, and shaking to the rhythm of those tunes.  The librarian uses drum beats to practice listening skills and body control with toddlers. Puppets are used to make animal sounds along with the children to engage in language development and imagination.  Readalouds involve asking questions of our storytime groups about what they are seeing or what comes next encouraging critical thinking and comprehension.  None of the above is or needs to be quiet and we welcome that!

Is literacy LOUD at your house?

We invite you to embrace that noisiness with these Library resources:
