Readbox Continues for Another Year!

Readbox Continues for Another Year!

Watching movies is entertaining. But what happens when we watch a movie after first having read the book it was based on? The entertainment experience changes. Now, we are watching with a critical eye, one looking for contrasts and comparisons, all good critical thinking skills. And all great skills for kids.

Sharing this activity with kids is fun, a great bonding experience for a parent and child. Our Readbox program is a parent-child, book-to-movie club where parents and kids simultaneously read a chapter book and then meet up at the Library for a brief discussion of the book before viewing the movie together. After watching the movie, the group shares an (often lively) discussion of how everyone loved, or hated, the interpretation of the movie makers.

It is a thoroughly enjoyable activity for parents, kids, and the librarians involved. Miss Becky, Youth Librarian at HMMPL, shares about a recent Readbox night where her group watched the movie “The Secret of Nimh” after having first read the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien. There was a raucous reaction from both kids and parents after first flipping on the lights at the end of the movie. “I can not tell you how fun it was to hear the over-the-top reactions of the kids and parents essentially yelling out, ‘What on earth just happened?'” She calls it a favorite memory of her years working in the library.

Get your kiddo and join us this year! It’s alot of fun. Here is the book schedule by month; click here to register for September’s Readbox. (Books are available for checkout at the Youth Services reference desk one month prior to the book club.)
